How to use
This tool calculates a simple resistive voltage divider. With no load, Vout depends on R1 and R2; a load RL in parallel with R2 can reduce the output.
- Enter Vin, R1 and R2.
- Leave RL=0 for no load or enter a positive load.
- Compare unloaded and loaded Vout.
- Review source and load current.
How it is calculated
No load: Vout=Vin×R2/(R1+R2); with load, replace R2 by R2∥RL
Example
Example: 12 V with R1=R2=10 kΩ gives 6 V unloaded. A 10 kΩ load makes the lower equivalent 5 kΩ and Vout 4 V.
Important notes
The model assumes ideal resistors and source; it does not check resistor power, current limits or tolerance.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Vout drop with load?
RL parallels R2 and reduces the effective lower resistance.
Can resistor units be mixed?
This version uses one common unit to reduce input errors.
What does RL=0 mean here?
In this interface it means no load.
