How to use
Newton’s universal-gravitation law gives the attraction between point masses, or bodies approximated by masses at their centers, using center-to-center separation.
- Enter m₁ and m₂ in kilograms.
- Enter center separation r in metres.
- Calculate force and acceleration of each mass.
How it is calculated
F=Gm₁m₂/r²; a₁=F/m₁; a₂=F/m₂
Example
Example: 1000 kg and 2000 kg masses separated by 10 m attract with only about 1.33×10⁻⁶ N.
Important notes
The calculator uses G=6.67430×10⁻¹¹ SI. Extended non-spherical bodies or separations small relative to body size may require a distributed-mass model.
Frequently asked questions
Is r surface-to-surface?
No, it is center-to-center separation in this model.
Why is force tiny for everyday objects?
Because G is very small in SI units.
Do both masses have the same acceleration?
Force magnitude is equal, but a=F/m so acceleration depends on mass.
