How to use
Kinematic viscosity is dynamic viscosity divided by fluid density and is widely used in flow characterization and Reynolds-number calculations.
- Enter μ in Pa·s.
- Enter density in kg/m³.
- Calculate ν.
- Review m²/s and cSt.
How it is calculated
ν=μ/ρ
Example
Using μ=0.001 Pa·s and ρ=1000 kg/m³ gives ν=1×10⁻⁶ m²/s = 1 cSt.
Important notes
Viscosity and density can both vary with temperature and pressure; use values for the actual state.
Frequently asked questions
SI unit of ν?
m²/s.
Relation to cSt?
1 cSt equals 10⁻⁶ m²/s.
Are μ and ν the same?
No; μ is dynamic and ν=μ/ρ is kinematic.
