How to use
Hydraulic power is the useful energy rate delivered to the fluid. Required shaft power is higher when pump efficiency is below 100%.
- Enter density and gravity.
- Enter Q and H.
- Enter pump efficiency as percent.
- Review hydraulic and shaft power.
How it is calculated
Ph=ρgQH; Pshaft=Ph/η
Example
Pumping water at 0.02 m³/s against 20 m head at 75% efficiency requires about 3.92 kW hydraulic and 5.23 kW shaft power.
Important notes
Use total operating head rather than static elevation alone when network losses or outlet pressure matter.
Frequently asked questions
Hydraulic vs shaft power?
Hydraulic power reaches the fluid; shaft power is required before pump losses.
Does efficiency include motor losses?
Not unless you intentionally use a combined efficiency.
Is H only elevation?
Not necessarily; total system head can include pressure, velocity and friction terms.
