How to use
Estimate mulch volume in cubic metres and litres, plus whole bags, from bed area, layer depth and bag volume.
- Enter Area (m²).
- Enter Thickness or depth (cm).
- Enter Waste or extra allowance (%).
- Enter Bag volume (litres).
- Calculate, then review the results and method assumptions.
How it is calculated
Example
A 30 m² bed at 5 cm depth needs 1.5 m³ before allowance. With 10% added it becomes 1.65 m³ or 1,650 litres: 33 bags if each contains 50 litres.
Important notes
The tool assumes a uniform layer and does not choose a depth for a plant species. Exclude uncovered areas and verify product volume and compaction; bulk material can settle during transport and spreading.
Worked examples and interpreting results
A 30 m² bed at 5 cm depth needs 1.5 m³ before allowance. With 10% added it becomes 1.65 m³ or 1,650 litres: 33 bags if each contains 50 litres.
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Volume with allowance | 30 × (5 ÷ 100) × 1.10 | 1.65 m³ |
| Bag count | 1650 ÷ 50 | 33 |
How to check the result
The tool assumes a uniform layer and does not choose a depth for a plant species. Exclude uncovered areas and verify product volume and compaction; bulk material can settle during transport and spreading.
Frequently asked questions
Do litres measure weight here?
Litres measure volume. Converting to weight requires material density and moisture information.
Is the bag count rounded?
Yes, upward so purchased bags cover the required volume. Cubic metres and litres remain decimal estimates.
Does the result include purchase cost?
This tool estimates quantities only. Multiply packages or required volume by your actual price, then add transport and other project materials.
