How to use
A date difference measures elapsed calendar days between a start date and an end date, taking varying month lengths and leap years into account. Before using a result for a booking, project or deadline, distinguish elapsed days from inclusive counting that includes both endpoint dates. These two methods can differ by one day. A date interval also differs from a count of working days or a precise duration between two times in different time zones.
- Choose a complete start date including the year rather than estimating a month length.
- Enter the end date, taking special care when crossing February or the end of a year.
- Interpret the result as elapsed calendar days, then apply inclusive counting only when the rules require it.
- For contracts or official deadlines, verify whether weekends and holidays must be excluded.
How it is calculated
Example
Between August 1 and August 11 there are ten elapsed days, or eleven dates if the start and end dates both count. Leap years can also change the result: from February 28 to March 1 in 2024, two days pass because February 29 exists. The equivalent dates in 2025 are one day apart. Approximating every month as thirty days would give unreliable results across such boundaries.
Important notes
This result does not automatically mean working days, because weekends, public holidays and contractual non-working days may need separate treatment. Nor does a calendar-day interval imply a precise number of hours across time zones or daylight-saving transitions. For legal deadlines, payment periods or government forms, apply the counting rules specified by the relevant institution rather than treating an elapsed-day figure as a universal answer.
Worked examples and interpreting results
From 1 February to 1 March 2024 the difference is 29 days; in 2025 it is 28. Date difference measures elapsed days without adding the starting day.
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| February in a leap year | 2024-03-01 − 2024-02-01 | 29 |
| February in a common year | 2025-03-01 − 2025-02-01 | 28 |
How to check the result
Enter two complete dates. This tool returns an absolute difference even when inputs are reversed. For working days, use business days with the appropriate weekend setting.
Frequently asked questions
Why is inclusive counting one day longer?
Elapsed counting measures the gap between August 1 and August 11 as ten days. Counting both dates yields eleven calendar dates.
Do leap years change date differences?
Yes. Between February 28 and March 1, two days pass in leap-year 2024, whereas the same dates in 2025 are one day apart.
Are calendar days and working days the same?
No. Working-day calculations must account for the relevant weekends and holidays in the selected country or institution.
