Deck Board Quantity Calculator

Estimate deck-board count from deck area, board width and length, gap and waste using a simplified effective-coverage model.

Starting values are an editable worked example.

How to use

Estimate deck-board count from deck area, board width and length, gap and waste using a simplified effective-coverage model.

  1. Enter Deck area (m²).
  2. Enter Board width (mm).
  3. Enter Board length (m).
  4. Enter Gap between boards (mm).
  5. Enter Waste (%).
  6. Calculate, then review the assumptions before purchasing.

How it is calculated

Effective coverage per board = (width + gap) × length; boards = round up area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage

Example

A 30 m² deck with 140 mm × 4 m boards, a 5 mm gap and 10% waste gives an estimate of 57 boards.

Important notes

This is a simplified area model, not a geometric deck layout. Board direction, spans, butt joints and borders can change the count; prepare a cut plan before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a cut layout?

No. It is an area-based quantity estimate; real cut planning requires laying board lengths out against deck dimensions.

Should I include waste?

Include an allowance when cuts, breakage or layout losses are expected. Use a percentage that fits your project rather than assuming one fixed rate.

Do the units need to match?

Yes. The calculator assumes the units stated beside each field, so convert measurements first when your source uses different units.
