Dilution Calculator

Calculate final volume and solvent to add when diluting a solution from a stock concentration to a lower target concentration using C₁V₁=C₂V₂.

Assumes solute amount is conserved and no reaction changes the solute during dilution.

How to use

During dilution without solute loss or reaction, solute amount stays constant, giving C₁V₁=C₂V₂.

  1. Enter stock concentration C₁.
  2. Enter available volume V₁.
  3. Enter target concentration C₂.
  4. Review V₂ and solvent to add.

How it is calculated

C₁V₁=C₂V₂

Example

100 mL of 1 M stock diluted to 0.2 M requires 500 mL final volume, so about 400 mL solvent is added under simple volume additivity.

Important notes

Volume units may be mL or L as long as V₁ and V₂ match; concentration units must also match.

Frequently asked questions

Can target concentration exceed stock?

Not by simple dilution.

Do units cancel?

Yes when concentration units match and volume units match.

Are volumes always additive?

Not exactly for all non-ideal solutions; this tool uses the simple dilution approximation.
