Drywall Sheet Calculator

Calculate net surface area and whole drywall sheets from surface area, openings, sheet dimensions and waste.

Starting values are an editable worked example.

How to use

Calculate net surface area and whole drywall sheets from surface area, openings, sheet dimensions and waste.

  1. Enter Surface area (m²).
  2. Enter Openings (m²).
  3. Enter Sheet length (m).
  4. Enter Sheet width (m).
  5. Enter Waste (%).
  6. Calculate, then review the assumptions before purchasing.

How it is calculated

Sheet area = length × width; sheets = round up net area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area

Example

A 120 m² surface minus 10 m² of openings, using 2.4×1.2 m sheets and 10% waste, needs 43 sheets.

Important notes

This is an area estimate. Stud layout, wall height, sheet orientation and cuts around openings can change the actual count; plan the sheet layout before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter wall area only?

Enter the total surfaces actually being covered. Walls and ceilings may be combined only when the same sheet specification is appropriate.

Should I include waste?

Include an allowance when cuts, breakage or layout losses are expected. Use a percentage that fits your project rather than assuming one fixed rate.

Do the units need to match?

Yes. The calculator assumes the units stated beside each field, so convert measurements first when your source uses different units.
