Paint Quantity and Can Calculator

Estimate paint litres and whole cans from net area after openings, coat count, product coverage and an extra allowance.

Starting values are an editable worked example.

How to use

Estimate paint litres and whole cans from net area after openings, coat count, product coverage and an extra allowance.

  1. Enter Area (m²).
  2. Enter Excluded door and window area (m²).
  3. Enter Number of coats.
  4. Enter Coverage per litre per coat (m²/L).
  5. Enter Waste or extra allowance (%).
  6. Enter Can size (litres).
  7. Calculate, then review the results and method assumptions.

How it is calculated

Paint litres = (area − openings) × coats ÷ coverage_m²/L × (1 + waste/100)

Example

An area of 60 m² minus 10 m² of openings, two coats and coverage of 10 m²/L per coat needs 10 litres before allowance and 11 with 10% added. Five-litre cans require three cans.

Important notes

Use the product’s single-coat coverage. Texture, porosity and color changes can alter consumption. Calculate primer and topcoat separately with their own coverage; ceilings are included only if you add their area.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter net or gross wall area?

Enter area before excluding openings, then enter openings separately. If your area is already net, set openings to zero to avoid double subtraction.

Is 10 m² per litre a fixed coverage?

It is the example’s assumption. Replace it with coverage for your product and surface; enter coat count separately.

Does the result include purchase cost?

This tool estimates quantities only. Multiply packages or required volume by your actual price, then add transport and other project materials.
