How to use
Use this tip calculator to work out the gratuity, grand total and each person’s share in one place. Tax and service charge are entered separately, you can choose what the tip percentage applies to, and you can use a custom rate or a quick preset. The tool does not assume tipping is required or recommend one universal rate because customs differ by country and venue.

How it is calculated
Example
Example: with a $200 bill, no separate tax, a $10 service charge and a 15% tip calculated on the bill only, the tip is $30 and the grand total is $240. Split four ways, each person pays $60 before any optional rounding.
Important notes
Check the receipt before adding anything: a service charge or automatic gratuity may already be included. If displayed prices already include tax, do not add tax again. Enter all amounts in the same currency. Rounding changes the grand total to the nearest whole unit or nearest 0.5, depending on your selection.
Worked examples and interpreting results
A 100 bill,10 tax,5 service charge and 15% tip on the bill alone total 130. Split equally between two people, each pays 65.

How to check the result
Select bill-only tip basis and no rounding. Including tax or service in the tip basis changes the result even with the same percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Should I calculate a tip before or after tax?
There is no single universal rule. The calculator lets you apply the percentage to the bill only, bill plus tax, or bill plus tax and service charge so the arithmetic matches your intended basis.
What is the difference between a service charge and a tip?
A service charge is a fee added by the venue, while a tip is often an additional amount chosen by the customer. Check the receipt so the same charge is not counted twice.
Can I split the bill equally?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the calculator shows each person’s share of the final total.
What does rounding do?
You can keep the exact total, round it to the nearest whole unit, or round it to the nearest 0.5.
Can I use any currency?
Yes. The calculator does not convert currencies, so enter all amounts in the same currency.
