How it is calculated
Example
Costs of 6,000, 3,000, 2,500, 500 and 12,000 total 24,000 annually; over 20,000 km that is 1.2 per km.
Important notes
Use a consistent cost scope when comparing vehicles. Including depreciation for one vehicle but not another makes the comparison misleading.
Worked examples and interpreting results
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | 6000 + 3000 + 2500 + 500 + 12000 | 24,000 |
| Per km | 24000 ÷ 20000 | 1.2 |
Frequently asked questions
Should loan payments be included?
Payments include principal that may build equity, so first decide whether you measure cash flow or economic cost.
Is the result an estimate or an actual cost?
It is a calculation based on your inputs. Actual prices, consumption and fees can vary by vehicle, route and energy source.
How should two scenarios be compared?
Use the same distance, period and units, and change one variable at a time where possible.
