How to use
- Enter Actual rental revenue.
- Enter Potential rental revenue.
- Calculate, then verify which items are included in the definition before comparing.
How it is calculated
Economic occupancy = actual rental revenue ÷ potential rent × 100
Example
Actual rental revenue of 540,000 versus 600,000 potential gives 90% economic occupancy and a 60,000 gap.
Important notes
Economic occupancy reflects vacancy, concessions and collections, so it can differ from physical occupancy even when many units are occupied.
Worked examples and interpreting results
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Economic occupancy | 540000 ÷ 600000 × 100 | 90 % |
| Revenue gap | 600000 − 540000 | 60,000 |
Frequently asked questions
How does this differ from physical occupancy?
Physical occupancy uses unit counts; economic occupancy uses actual revenue versus potential.
Are these rates legally required?
No. This is a general math tool; actual fees, rates and rules vary by contract, provider and jurisdiction.
How should two scenarios be compared?
Use the same period and cost definitions, and change one variable at a time where possible.
