How to use
- Enter Freight trip cost.
- Enter Distance km.
- Calculate, then review units, cost scope and billing rule before comparing.
How it is calculated
Freight cost/km = total trip cost ÷ distance
Example
A freight trip costing 3,000 over 1,200 km gives an average cost of 2.5 per kilometre.
Important notes
Do not treat the average as a marginal rate. Loading, waiting and other fixed costs can make shorter trips more expensive per km.
Worked examples and interpreting results
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Per km | 3000 ÷ 1200 | 2.5 |
| Distance | 1200 | 1,200 |
Frequently asked questions
Should empty return distance be included?
If measuring the full economic trip, include the actual return distance and costs.
Is the result an actual carrier quote?
No. The calculator applies your inputs mathematically; carriers may use minimums, zones, tiers, fees and different rounding rules.
What matters most before comparing?
Keep units, period and cost scope consistent, and know whether pricing uses actual, dimensional or chargeable weight.
