How to use
This calculator uses F=μN for a chosen friction coefficient. Enter normal force directly, or derive it from a mass on an incline and compare μN with the gravity component along the slope.
- Choose direct-N or incline mode.
- Enter μ.
- Enter N or mass/angle.
- Review μN and the slope gravity component.
How it is calculated
Ff=μN; on an incline N=mgcosθ and F∥=mgsinθ
Example
Example: μ=0.3 and N=100 N gives a reference friction magnitude of 30 N.
Important notes
For static friction, μsN is the maximum before slipping, not necessarily the actual force at all times. For kinetic friction, use the appropriate μk for the surfaces and conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is F=μN always the actual static friction?
No. For static friction it is a limiting maximum.
Why does N fall on an incline?
The perpendicular weight component is mgcosθ.
Does μ have units?
No, it is dimensionless.
