How to use
In mechanics, work is energy transfer by a force acting through a displacement. Only the component parallel to motion contributes, so the calculator uses the cosine of the angle between force and displacement.
- Enter force in newtons.
- Enter displacement in metres.
- Enter the angle from 0° to 180°.
- Review work, parallel force and sign.
How it is calculated
W=F·d·cosθ; F∥=Fcosθ
Example
Example: 100 N moving an object 5 m in the same direction gives 500 J. At 90° work is zero; above 90° it becomes negative.
Important notes
This equation assumes constant force and angle. If force changes with position, an integral is required instead of simple Fdcosθ.
Frequently asked questions
Why is work zero at 90°?
The force component along the displacement is zero.
Is negative work an error?
No; it means the force component opposes displacement.
Is a joule a N·m?
Yes for work/energy: 1 J = 1 N·m.
