How to use
Mechanical power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy. This calculator supports work divided by time and force times velocity with an angle component.
- Choose W/t or Fv.
- Enter the relevant values.
- For Fv, enter the force/velocity angle.
- Review W, kW and mechanical hp.
How it is calculated
P=W/t or P=F·v·cosθ
Example
Example: doing 1000 J of work in 10 s gives an average mechanical power of 100 W.
Important notes
P=Fvcosθ is instantaneous/steady power when the values represent the same instant; changing motion may require time-dependent analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Work versus power?
Work is transferred energy; power is its rate.
Watts per mechanical horsepower?
About 745.7 W per mechanical hp.
Can power be negative?
Yes mathematically when force opposes velocity.
