How to use
Estimate mortar bags from work area, product coverage per bag and allowance.
- Enter Work area (m²).
- Enter Coverage per bag (m²).
- Enter Allowance (%).
- Calculate, then review the assumptions before purchasing.
How it is calculated
Example
A 30 m² work area with 10% allowance and 1.5 m² coverage per bag requires 22 bags.
Important notes
Mortar coverage varies widely with bed thickness, masonry size, joints and product. Enter manufacturer coverage for conditions close to your project rather than relying on a generic rate.
Worked examples and interpreting results
A 30 m² work area with 10% allowance and 1.5 m² coverage per bag requires 22 bags.
| Case | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted area | 30 × 1.10 | 33 m² |
| Bags | ceil(33 ÷ 1.5) | 22 |
How to check the result
Mortar coverage varies widely with bed thickness, masonry size, joints and product. Enter manufacturer coverage for conditions close to your project rather than relying on a generic rate.
Frequently asked questions
Why not calculate from bag weight alone?
Bag weight alone does not determine coverage because mix, thickness and mortar type vary. Product coverage is a better area basis.
Should I include waste?
Include an allowance when cuts, breakage or layout losses are expected. Use a percentage that fits your project rather than assuming one fixed rate.
Do the units need to match?
Yes. The calculator assumes the units stated beside each field, so convert measurements first when your source uses different units.
