How to use
- Enter Monthly rent.
- Enter Gross monthly income.
- Calculate, then verify which items are included in the definition before comparing.
How it is calculated
Rent-to-income = monthly rent ÷ gross monthly income × 100
Example
Rent of 3,000 on gross income of 10,000 gives a 30% ratio and leaves 7,000 before other expenses.
Important notes
There is no universal affordability threshold. Taxes, debt, household size and living costs affect actual affordability.
Worked examples and interpreting results
| Case | Calculation | Result |

| Income after rent | 10000 − 3000 | 7,000 |
Frequently asked questions
Is 30% a mandatory rule?
No. A rule of thumb does not replace a full household budget or provider-specific criteria.
Are these rates legally required?
No. This is a general math tool; actual fees, rates and rules vary by contract, provider and jurisdiction.
How should two scenarios be compared?
Use the same period and cost definitions, and change one variable at a time where possible.
