How to use
Capacitive reactance is an ideal capacitor’s opposition magnitude to sinusoidal AC. Xc falls as frequency or capacitance rises.
- Enter frequency and unit.
- Enter capacitance and unit.
- Optionally enter RMS voltage.
- Review Xc, ω and current.
How it is calculated
Xc=1/(2πfC); ω=2πf; with RMS voltage: I=V/Xc
Example
Example: 10 µF at 60 Hz gives Xc≈265.26 Ω.
Important notes
Reactance is not dissipative resistance; ESR and parasitics can change real behavior.
Frequently asked questions
What happens as frequency rises?
Xc decreases inversely with f.
What about DC?
As f→0, Xc tends to infinity.
Is the current idealized?
Yes, for a pure capacitor.
